Interventional pain management is the treatment of chronic pain through non-surgical procedures. These interventional methods could treat your pain rather than providing a temporary medication solution.

Nerve Root & Facet Blocks
A selective nerve root block (SNRB) injection or just nerve block injection is used to both diagnose and treat an inflamed spinal nerve. A medication, typically, an anesthetic or anesthetic with steroid is administered near the spinal nerve as it exits the intervertebral foramen (bony opening between adjacent vertebrae). The medication reduces inflammation and numbs the pain transmitted by the nerve.

Stem Cell Therapy
Adult stem cell therapy can effectively treat many conditions ranging from degenerative arthritis to ligament and tendon injuries. Stem cell therapy at IPI may alleviate not only chronic pain but also dysfunction from arthritis and chronic injuries.
Dr. Fussell uses embryonic stem cells. These stem cells help to repair and regenerate wounded tissue. The procedure involves minimally invasive bone marrow extraction and image-guided injections to precisely target areas of injured tissue.

Vertebral Disc Decompressions
One of the most common causes of spinal cord compression is the gradual wear and tear on the bones of the spine, known as osteoarthritis. People who develop spinal cord compression from this are usually older than 50.
Spinal cord compression can occur anywhere from your neck (cervical spine) down to your lower back (lumbar spine). Symptoms include numbness, pain, and weakness. Depending on the cause of the compression, symptoms may develop suddenly or gradually, and they may require anything from supportive care to emergency surgery.

Epidural Steroid Injections
The goals of an epidural steroid injection are to:
- Control pain by reducing inflammation in and around the nerve roots
- Improve mobility and function in the lower back and legs
- Allow the patient to participate in and make progress with a comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitation program

Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an advanced treatment that can help repair and regenerate injured soft tissue and reduce pain. Multiple published scientific studies have confirmed the effectiveness of this therapy, and thousands of patients – including professional athletes – have benefited from PRP injections. PRP therapy may be an alternative to surgery. Ask for a consultation on your specific chronic pain case by contacting Interventional Pain Institute (IPI) at (229) 405-2470.

Intrathecal Pumps
An intrathecal pump or a “pain pump” is a device that delivers small quantities of pain medication such as morphine or baclofen, directly to the spinal fluid. When delivered in small doses, pain medications may minimize the side effects often experienced with larger oral doses of the same medications.
A pump can lessen the pain associated with failed back surgery, cancer, or nerve pain. It can also reduce spasticity, or muscle rigidity, in patients with:
- Cerebral palsy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Stroke
- Brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
A trial intrathecal injection or a temporary intrathecal pump is usually performed to determine whether the medication is effective and a permanent pump is appropriate.

Spinal Cord Simulators
Spinal cord stimulators consist of thin wires (the electrodes) and a small, pacemaker-like battery pack (the generator). The electrodes are placed between the spinal cord and the vertebrae (the epidural space), and the generator is placed under the skin, usually near the buttocks or abdomen. Spinal cord stimulators allow patients to send the electrical impulses using a remote control when they feel pain. Both the remote control and its antenna are outside the body.

Radio frequency Neurolysis
RFN is a treatment offered by a Dr. Fussell when conservative treatments such as rest, medications, and physical therapy have failed to treat joint pain. This procedure provides long-term relief from joint pain in many areas of the body including the neck, back, pelvis, hips, and knees.
RFN uses heat to lesion and desensitize (turn off) specific nerves in order to stop them from releasing pain signals from a joint. Since the lesioned nerve regrows very slowly, patients can enjoy long-term pain relief for months or even years at a time. INTRA-ATICULAR JOINT INJECTIONS
An intra-articular injection is delivered directly into a joint with the primary aim of relieving pain. This is achieved using steroids, local anesthetics, hyaluronic acid, and even Botox. The injections can be performed with and without fluoroscopy/live x-ray.
